Harold John Montag, son of Ferdinand and Mary (Duffy) Montag, was born December 1, 1930 in West Bend, Iowa.  Harold attended St. Peter & Paul’s Catholic School and West Bend High School, graduating in 1948.  He studied at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa for two years before returning to West Bend to farm. Harold and Betty Cleal were united in marriage January 5, 1952 at St. Peter & Paul’s Catholic Church in West Bend. Harold enlisted in the United States Army in 1952. Harold and Betty moved frequently the next couple of years as Harold was stationed in Texas, Georgia and California. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and acted as drill sergeant and weapons instructor.  Upon Harold’s honorable discharge in 1954 the couple moved back to West Bend to farm and raise their family.  Harold was an active member of his church and community. He was a long time bus driver for the West Bend Community School District. He was a member of the American Legion and was Master of Ceremonies for the annual Memorial Day service for many years. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus and achieved the status of 4th Degree Knight. Harold was also very devoted to his wife, children and grandchildren.  He died December 4, 2020 at West Bend Health & Rehabilitation with his daughters at his side. Survivors include his daughters Teresa (Michael) Dammann and Sara Grant; grandchildren:  Matthew (Becca) Dammann, Anna Dammann, Nathan (Amanda) Dammann, Blaine (Haley) Dammann, Brionna Montag and Noah Grant; eight great grandchildren; sister-in-law Joan Montag and numerous nieces and nephews. Harold was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 67 years, Betty, in 2019; brother Raphael Montag; sister-in-law Nancy Sommers and brother-in-law Gerald Sommers.
