Harold E. “Hal” Devaney, 86, of Elkhart, passed away on Friday, Aug. 3, 2012. He was born on June 5, 1926, in Butler, N.J., to the late John A. and Annie C. (Dilzer) Devaney. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Gerard Devaney. Hal married Nancy Ann Burgdorff on Sept. 21, 1957, in Butler. She died Feb. 22, 2000.
Surviving are a son, Brian (Zaida) Devaney of Sacramento, Calif.; a daughter, Pamela (James) North of Elkhart; four grandchildren; three brothers, Bob Devaney of Hamberg, N.J., Jack (Connie) Devaney of Goose Creek, S.C. and Donald Devaney of Manchester, N.J.; and a sister, Eileen Mungenast of Matawan, N.J.
Mr. Devaney was a graduate and valedictorian of the 1944 class at Butler High School. He received a B.S. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. in 1951, an M.S. in chemical engineering from Newark College of Engineering in Newark, N.J. in 1957, and an M.S. in business administration from IUSB in 1981.
Harold worked as a production supervisor for American Cyanamid Co. in Bound, N.J., and as a research engineer and process engineer for General Foods Corp. in Tarrytown, N.Y., and Evansville, and Lummus Engineering Co. in Chicago Heights, Ill. He also worked as a laboratory manager for Ward Foods Co. in Bronx, N.Y. He spent the last 23 years of his career as a process manager for Miles Laboratories in Elkhart, California, Columbia and South America until his retirement in 1990.
Hal was a registered professional engineer in the state of Illinois and was a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineering and the Institute of Food Technologies. He was a past president of the Breakfast Optimist Club in Evansville and was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Elkhart.
