Harold “Ed” Womble, 94, of Centralia, passed away Monday, June 7, 2021 at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia.
He was born October 8, 1926 in Centralia, Ill. to Joseph and Thelma (Atchison) Womble. He married Betty Ann Greear on September 6, 1948.
Survivors are two daughters, Jean Shepherd and husband Chuck of Kingwood, TX., Susan McCarthy of Rockford, Ill.; one son Mark AKA Corey Stevens and wife Linda of Los Angeles. Six grandchildren, Kevin Shepherd and wife Natalie of Rockwall, TX,. Kellee Spangle and husband Steve of McKinney, TX., Kari Holman and husband Kevin of Allen, TX.; Adam McCarthy of Rockford, Ill., Brent McCarthy of Loves Park, Ill. and Cori Lynn Stevens of Los Angeles. Five great-granddaughters, Alyssa and Ainsley Spangle, Sydney Shepherd, Josie McCarthy, Lexi Holman; and four great-grandsons; Alex Tsiganos, Braylon McCarthy, Logan Holman; and Blake Shepherd.
He lived all his life in Centralia and was a retired Centralia High School teacher. He began his teaching career in 1953 at Patoka before coming to Centralia where he taught for 28 years. He had a Bachelor’s degree in vocational education. He has a Master’s degree and a specialist Certificate in Job Placement from Southern Illinois University. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force during World War II. He also, was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, The First Presbyterian Church of Centralia and the Centralia Moose and Elks Lodge. He was an avid fisherman.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and stepfather.
