Harold D. “Brod” McKenzie, 88, of Lostant, passed away Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at the Ottawa Pavilion. Harold “Brod” was born October 3, 1932 in Lostant to Harold C. and Bertha (Fitzpatrick) McKenzie. After serving his country in the United States Army, Harold went on to obtain a degree in education from Illinois State University.
Shortly thereafter he walked into Ransom Grade School where he quickly began building a fan club as an educator, coach and mentor. He spent the next 36 years at RGS, 34 of those as superintendent. In June 1993, the school dedicated their gymnasium in his name. Harold was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Class of 2020, in the “career coach” category for his time spent coaching at RGS.
Survivors include his niece, Charmayne McKenzie and four nephews, Richard McKenzie, John McKenzie, Dan McKenzie and Todd McKenzie. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Shirley; two brothers, Robert McKenzie and Richard McKenzie and his lifelong companion, Beverly Hoag.
