Gladstone, MIHarold George Berg, 84, of 10235 N.5 Road, Gladstone, passed away Monday, Feb. 6, 2017, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Harold was born at home on Dec. 11, 1932, the son of George and Wanda (Harper) Berg. He grew up in the Brampton and Gladstone areas, graduating in 1951 from Gladstone High School.

On Sept. 2, 1961, he married the former Lois Mattson at the Bethel Evangelical Free Church in Gladstone and they shared 55 years together.

Harold was employed with the State of Michigan in the Federal Surplus Division for 38 years, retiring in 1994. He was a member of New Horizon Methodist Church (formerly Bethel Evangelical Free Church) of Gladstone, a member of the American Legion Post 71 in Gladstone, a life member of Elks Lodge 354 in Escanaba, and former member of the local Swedish Club.

He was an avid outdoor enthusiast and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, gardening, and travelling. He was a self-taught artist and spent many hours creating a variety of both wildlife and scenic oil paintings. But, having held a private pilot’s license for many years, his life-long and greatest passion was flying and anything involved in the field of aviation.

Along with his many talents, Harold will be remembered for his contributions to various organizations, his kind, generous heart and his knack for making others laugh with one of his many stories, jokes or quips.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Berg of Gladstone; son, Alan Berg of Bradenton, Fla.; beloved former daughter-in-law, Susan (Dahn) Berg of Gladstone; granddaughters, Ashley Bricker of St. Paul, Minn., and Heather Berg of Gladstone; great-grandsons, Zakary and Ashton Bricker. He is also survived by several nieces and a nephew.

In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by his son, Terry Berg, in 2016, his sister, Barbara (Berg) Jones, and brother-in-law, Myron Jones.
