Harlan Victor Porter, age 88, died on May 7, 2017. Harlan was born in Oklahoma on July 4, 1928. He grew up on Porter Street in Okmulgee, Oklahoma and was raised with 4 siblings by his parents Victor Emanuel Porter and Mary Etta Porter (Cole). He attended Dunbar High School and, after graduation, went to serve in the United States Army in 1946. After completing his tour in the military, he enrolled at the University of Denver on the advice of his father’s long-time friend, Chester Harris. While there he met and married Lolita Verna Hurst. Together they settled in Denver and had two daughters. Harlan was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Fraternity and retired from Red Rocks Community College where he was an administrative counselor. Harlan will be remembered by everyone who knew him for his creativity and humor. One look at his front and backyard, with their sculptures, ponds and gazebo made it clear that he was a talented landscaper. It was not uncommon for him to be asked to design a pond for the yard of a friend. He spent much of his spare time creating paintings, drawings, and mixed media sculpture which he proudly displayed in his home. He used his humor to everyone’s advantage by treating mishaps and human foibles in a humorous way to lessen their negative impacts. He was the first to laugh at himself and in a group of friends he could often be found to be the center of attention, telling a funny story or anecdote to laughter and cheers. Both of these qualities, creativity and humor, served him well as husband, father, grandfather and friend. His family would like to thank the staff at Brookdale Highline Senior Living, for their wonderful and supportive care and attention to Harlan’s needs. From the very first day, he was treated as an individual who was a valuable addition to the Brookdale community.
