Gwyneth M. Satterlee, age 93 of Midland, died on Sunday, December 4, 2016 at Kings Daughters Home in Midland. She was born February 7, 1923 to the late Charles C. and Elizabeth M. Jones in Swansea, S. Wales, U.K. where she was raised and educated.
Gwyneth began her secretarial career at The British Broadcasting Corporation in Swansea, then after the Swansea premises were destroyed by bombs during W.W.II she continued working for the B.B.C. in Camarthen, Cardiff and London. While in Carmarthen she met her future husband, James E. Satterlee, who was stationed with the U.S. Army Medical Corp. in England and Wales. They were married in Cardiff on Dec. 11, 1945.Gwyneth moved to Midland in Apr. 1946 to make her home with her husband. They were married almost 54 years until Jim’s death in Oct. 1999. Gwyneth continued her secretarial career with the law firm of Currie and Kendall in Midland where she was employed for 28 years. She was a 50+ year member of the First United Methodist Church of Midland and a member of the church’s Jean Elder Circle. Through the years she volunteered her time in various departments at Midland Hospital and was also a big sister.
She is survived by two children, Janice of Grand Rapids, and David and his wife, Phyllis, and their two sons, John and Duane, of Findlay, Ohio; a brother and sister-in-law, D. Mervyn and Clarice Jones of Cardiff; two nieces, Isabel(Michael) Carter and Ann (Kevin) Carey; five grand-nieces and grand nephews; and cousins, all of England and Wales. Gwyneth’s second daughter, Carol, died in 2002. She never lost touch with her homeland and made frequent trips to visit family and friends. She became an American citizen in 1957 and thereafter enjoyed the privileges of dual citizenship.
