Gwendolyn B. Carter, 95, of Freeport died on June 11, 2020. Born December 16, 1924, in Minneapolis, MN, she was the daughter of Reuben G. and Bertha M. (Smyth) Wherley.
On November 23, 1946, she and Floyd D. Carter were united in marriage in Rockford, IL. Gwendolyn was a licensed registered nurse and was a member of the Rockford Memorial Hospital Nurses Alumni Association, Class of 1946. She was very proud of being a nurse and had worked at the Deaconess Hospital in Freeport. She farmed with her husband in Stephenson County. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Freeport where she volunteered in the school library and sang in the choir. Her memberships also include the Freeport and Cedarville Women’s Clubs. She enjoyed gardening and baking.
Surviving are two children, Cindy Carter of Freeport and Michael (Carla) Carter of Holland, MI; four grandchildren, Brent (Kelly) Carter, Dan Carter, Jessica Crouse Kirk, and Jennifer Crouse; one great-granddaughter, Autumn Kirk; one great-grandson, Wyatt Carter; and one brother, Larry Wherley of Machesney Park, IL.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Floyd; her parents; one daughter, Christine Carter Crouse; an infant son, Charles; sisters, Eleanor Roland, Lorraine Hoorelbeck, Darlene Reimann, and Linda Beishir; and brothers, Reuben, Jim, Douglas, and Dennis Wherley.
