Guy Roy Sykes Jr., 83, of Belton, TX, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 7, 2013. Guy was born August 11,1929 in Winona, MS to Guy Roy Sykes Sr. and Mildred (Thompson) Sykes, who proceed him in death. The oldest of 2 sons, Guy graduated from Laurel High School in Laurel, Mississippi before attending Mississippi State University. After college, he enlisted in the Navy and was a veteran of the Korean War.
He served on General Mac Arthur’s staff in Japan before being stationed in Guam on the USS Fulton. Following his service in the Navy, Guy went to work for IBM, where he retired in 1990 after 38 years. He was an active member in his church, where he served as the music director. As a volunteer firefighter in Gaithersburg, MD, he received a commendation medal for his service during the riots in Washington, DC. Guy was also an enthusiastic member of the Elks and Lions Clubs in Austin and Wimberley, TX.
He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Lynn Sykes of Belton, TX He is also survived by his children, sons Guy Joel Sykes Sr. of Dallas, TX, Jon Nichols of Florence, TX and Stephen Nichols and wife Shana of Austin, TX., daughters Barbara O’Connor of Palm Coast, FL, Joanne Sykes-Pacheco and husband Ron of Galesburg, IL Debra Kelly and husband Donald of Avon, OH, Theresa Gray of Ft Worth, TX and Sandra Riddle and husband Larry of Denison, TX, his brother Tommy Sykes of Tavares, FL, sister-in laws, Carolyn Thomas and husband Ray of Hurst, TX, Jeanie Morris and husband Rick of Wiley, TX. His grandchildren, Guy Joel Sykes Jr., Justin Slagle, Christine Sykes, Brandi Blake and husband Mike, Douglas Gray Jr., Tevin Vest, Paige Riddle, Aimee Williams, Corrin Euvrard, Kristen Elliott, Patrick Kelly, Megan Kelly, Stephanie Douglas and husband Steven, Katelyn Nichols, and Daniel Nichols as well as 9 great-grand children. Nephews and nieces, Michael Sykes, Severin Samson, Bruce Thomas, Wayne Thomas, Chris Childres and Jennifer Dunn
