Gustav (Gus) Baumeister, age 98, passed away Saturday, December 11, 2021 at John Stoddard Rehab Center in Des Moines, Iowa. He was under Hospice care.
Gus was born on October 12, 1923 in Des Moines, Iowa to Nellie Lennox and Gustav Baumeister. He graduated from East High School (Des Moines) in 1941. Upon graduating, he enlisted in the United States Army, Private First Class, Infantry, 87th Mountain Infantry. He was awarded numerous decorations and citations which included the World War ll Victory Medal and the Bronze Star medal for heroism.
Following the service, he married Margaret Sjeklocha in 1946. They were married 75 years until her passing earlier this year. Gus enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing, playing cards, and taking Margaret to the casino.
Gus was a member of Grand View Lutheran Church in Des Moines.
Gus is survived by his son Mark (Linda) Baumeister of Urbandale; brother Chet Baumeister of Des Moines; granddaughters Marianne and Julie of Montana; 10 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Betty Zills, Jim Baumeister, Marion Rehor, Doris Reynolds.
