Gus Lewis Wood III, 78, went to be with his Heavenly Father Sunday April 3, 2016. He was born in LaGrange, Georgia, and died peacefully at his home in Newnan, Georgia.
His parents were Gus Lewis Wood Jr. and Lois Hardaway Wood. Mr. Wood grew up in LaGrange and graduated from LaGrange High School. He attended the University of Georgia, where he received his Bachelor’s degree and was President of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. Mr. Wood was admitted to the State Bar of Georgia in 1960 during his time attending the University of Georgia Law School, from which he graduated in 1961. Upon graduation from law school, Mr. Wood served honorably in the Army for two years in the Judge Advocate General Corps and obtained the rank of Captain. After his service in the Army, Mr. Wood served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia and also as the Law Clerk for Judge Lewis R. Morgan, Chief United States District Judge for the Northern District of Georgia. In 1966, Mr. Wood began his private practice of law in Newnan, Georgia, with the law firm that became Sanders, Mottola, Haugen, Wood & Goodson.
In 1978 he began practicing law in the firm that became Wood, Odom & Edge, where he practiced until his retirement in 2009. Mr. Wood was admired and respected by all who knew him and was a highly successful attorney who had an excellent reputation with the members of his profession and the general public. He served as a member of the Board of Governors of the State Bar of Georgia and as a member of the Disciplinary Committee of the State Bar. He was a member of the Newnan Country Club, the Newnan Rotary club and Central Baptist Church. Mr.
Wood is survived by his wife Debbie Stratton Wood and her daughter Evangeline Georgia Stratton, his sister Martha Ann Wood, his children Mark McLeod Wood, Morgan Alexander Wood, Joanna Wood Janas, and his six grandchildren.
