Gurnice (Baidy) Jackson Sykes was born August 2, 1923 in Hillsboro, AL to Fred Clack and Callie White Jackson, who preceded her in death. Gurnice departed this life on November 30, 2014. She professed a hope in Christ at an early age and joined Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church where she served as a member of the Sister’s Aide Society for many years, and president of the Senior Choir for over 30 years.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 70 years (Thomas Lawson Sykes II). They were joined in Holy Matrimony in December of 1940 and to this union five children were born. Both were a very devoted couple to their children, church and community. She assisted her husband in every way and was co-owner of The Family Elete Café in Hillsboro. Additionally, she was preceded in death by her one and only sister, Vergie Pointer, four brothers; Floyd Jackson, Willie Jackson, Birt Jackson, Andrew (Jack) Jackson and Duvel Clay Sr., four devoted nieces, Willie Mae(Kunnie) Davis, Willie Ann Miller, Louise (Luddie) Boulden and Mattie Jackson, one devoted nephew, Andrew (Junior) Jackson. All were cared for and parented by Callie White Jackson and two grandchildren, Antonia Francene Young Polk and James Thompson.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children; two daughters, Vergie Jean (Lawrence) Bell, Frances Ann (Johnny) Young of Hillsboro, AL; three sons, Freddie (Betty) Sykes, John Sykes and Tommy Sykes, Jr., all of Decatur, AL; fourteen grandchildren; two devoted nieces, Mary Sue Bowman, Mattie Locklayer and Mattie Miller all of whom were caretakers; two sisters-in-law, Carrie Garth Raybon of Chicago, IL and Mary Jo Garth of Ambler, PN, also a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
