Guillermo Gomez, 70, was called to his eternal rest on Saturday, December 11th, surrounded by his loving family.
Guillermo was born on April 14, 1951, in Anthony, New Mexico, to Juan H. and Domitila Gomez. He grew up in the Las Cruces area attending Las Cruces High. In 1968, he was drafted into the US Army and served in the Vietnam War. He returned stateside to Fort Hood, TX in 1970, where he met his beloved wife of 50 years, Sophia Alcozer, whom he married on February 6th, 1971.
After they married, he was stationed in Aschanffenburg, Germany, where they had their first child, Julia Michelle Gomez. They returned stateside to Fort Devens, Mass in 1974. He served a second tour of duty in Wildflecken, Germany, where he welcomed the birth of his second child, Guillermo Augustine Gomez. Guillermo received honorable discharge in 1979.
While in service he received the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal – 3D Award, and the Bronze Star Medal. After his Discharge, he returned to Texas and worked various jobs before joining the US Army Corps of Engineers, retiring in 2010. With the Corp of Engineers, he worked at Fort Hood, Fort Bliss, and Fort Sam Houston, Tx.
Guillermo Gomez was a devoted Catholic and a faithful servant. He lived his Catholic faith by helping Christ the King and Knights of Columbus serve the community. He served as Grand Knight for Council 7196 and Faithful Navigator for 4th Degree. He was an avid golfer, softball player and weightlifter. He loved to watch sports, especially any Texas teams. He was especially passionate about the Dallas Cowboys. He liked the simpler things in life such as traveling to National and State Parks, going camping, fishing, and hiking with his family.
But his greatest love was his family, especially his granddaughters: Alexandria Michelle Gomez-Armstrong, 24, of Dallas, Taylor Dawson Gomez, 21, of Belton, Leigh Brooke Gomez, 18, of Belton, Penelope Faye Gomez, 10, of Dallas, and great granddaughter Camila Rose Bella Gomez, 1, of Belton.
Guillermo is survived by his wife, daughter, son, and granddaughters as well as his brothers, Arturo Gomez; Joe Gomez and wife, Anna; and sisters: Jeannie Gomez of Las Cruces; Mary Lugo of El Paso, Tx. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Rosa Avila, and brothers, Robert Gomez, and Ruben Gomez. He also has many godchildren, nieces, and nephews whom he loved dearly.
