On August 13, 1959, the military satellite Discoverer was launched into orbit to test launching techniques and other aeronautical experiments. The launch was successful but there was no communication signal and no message. Therefore, few outside the military complex remember this launch.

On the same day, another discoverer began earthly pursuits. His name – Gregory S. Frazier, also affectionately known as “Uncle Greg” to his nieces. His parents – Alvin S. and Edna L. Frazier.

Like Discoverer, Greg was destined for inquisitiveness and displayed a quiet analytical passion for cerebral challenges. He loved reading. He was an avid chess player (even numbering the few people who ever beat him in the game – and exacting a terrible revenge on them in subsequent games). To engage him in conversation was to expand the boundaries of one’s initial perception of life or event as he deftly expounded on whatever the topic of conversation was. A towering figure, one might presuppose his quiet reserve as that of hermitic obstinance but to venture past the outward faAade and learn the individual opened a world of wisdom, caring and love presumed by many even if experienced by a few.

Greg graduated from Rockville High School with honors. Attended Morehouse College and Georgia Tech and had a thirty years working career with the United States Post Office.

He loved his mother – protected his sisters – assessed their husbands – and fawned over children. He is survived by his mother Edna Frazier; three sisters and brothers-in-law: Kimberly (Eugene) Sherman; Faye (Anthony) Little; Vicina (Carlton) Jordan; adoring nieces-Rosalynn (Prince) Winston; Jessica (Sentibaleng) Ncube; Nia and Kayla Little; Lauryn and Mya Jordan; three grandnieces; a grandnephew; and a host of relatives.

This launch was also successful on August 13, 1959. However, unlike the other Discoverer, this one will never be forgotten… because the message lives on!!!!
