Gene died at his home In Lillian Alabama on May 4, 2022. He was born August 13, 1944 to Mildred Bailey Whitten- Shaffer. He is survived by his wife Kelly Whitten; his daughters, Cindy Whitten, Leighann Whitten; three grandchildren, Magen Huntley, Amelia Stalter and Bryce Stalter. Three sisters; Mary Townsend (Hubert), Brenda Davis and Edna Ha!brooks (Ricky). He was preceded in death by his wife and first love, Carolyn Oakes Whitten; mother and step father, Mildred and Wayne Shaffer; his grandparents, Moses and Beulah Whitten and Newt and Annie Bailey; and one sister, Annette Shaffer.

He loved football and played for his high school, #70. He loved Alabama football. Gene graduated from Morgan County High School in 1963. He went to work for Monsanto. He later went to work at the new GM plant in Decatur AL in the boiler room where he worked until he retired in 2004. He worked hard. He and Carolyn had a dream to retire and live in Gulf Shores. They were able to achieve their dream and bought a home about 3 or 4 blocks from the beach in Gulf Shores. They loved their life in this beach town. They bought a home in Lillian Alabama and moved in the spring 2006, after Carolyn became afraid of the hurricanes after going thru one 2004 and 2005. Carolyn passed away in July 2006 and Gene continued to live in Lillian until his death in 2022.
