Mrs. Gracie Bell Mebane, 83, of 5405 Hadrian Drive, Durham, NC passed peacefully into glory on Monday June 6, 2011. She was born and raised in the loving home of the late I.C. Bell and Beatrice Craddock Bell in Birmingham, AL, After her graduation from Parker High school in Birmingham, she continued her education at Tuskegee Institute earning both her B.S. and M.S degrees, specializing in Food, Nutrition and Home Economics. She was a retired educator having taught at Rust College, Tuskegee Institute, and South Carolina State College. She was a life member and Golden Soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., in which she held many offices and was a charter member of Omicron Gamma Omega chapter. She was a founding member of the Homemakers Club of Anne Arundel County and a member of a bridge club. Mrs. Mebane was a good and faithful member of John Wesley United Methodist Church in Glen Burnie, MD, where she sang in the gospel choir and served on many church committees. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 48 years, Walter (“Dub”) Richard Mebane. She also survived three sisters, Annie Clark, Addie Ray, and Sylvia Bell. She is survived by her son, Walter R. Mebane Jr. of Michigan, a daughter Sylvia Brooks-Baine (Eddie Baine), two granddaughters, Erika and Mariah Brooks, one sister Dr. Mabel Anderson of Alabama, two brothers I.C. Bell, Jr. of Alabama and Lander Haygood of Georgia and a host of nieces and nephews.
