Grace Johnson of Carrollton, Georgia died Thursday, May 17, at the age of 95. Born in Oxford, Alabama, Grace moved to Newnan, Georgia with her family when she was three years old.

Grace graduated from Newnan High School and with her sister Mary Will, completed the two year degree program for teachers at West Georgia College in Carrollton, following in the footsteps of their sisters Evolyn and Annette. These strong women instilled a love of education and books as part of their legacy to their family.

Grace’s first teaching job was in Rome, Georgia, at the Tubize School. After six years there, she moved to Atlanta, continuing her education at Georgia State University while she taught in the Fulton County Schools, and later in the City of Atlanta School system.

She also worked for Rich’s department stores, retiring in the 1980s. Jimmy Owen, Grace’s first husband, passed away after five years of marriage. Her second marriage, to Charlie Johnson from Brooklyn, New York, lasted until Charlie’s death in 2004.

Her family will miss her greatly: Heidi Jones Squires and Hart Squires of Atlanta; Al and Mim Jones of Carrollton; Frances Kidd of Newnan; Susan Kidd of Atlanta; Beth Little of Alpharetta; Grace Marie and Mark Prince of Sandersville; and Renner Rose of Sandersville.
