Gourimani Uppaluru, age 91, of Miami, Florida passed away peacefully at home on March 29, 2021 surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Rajahmundry, India in 1929 to Mr.Nagabhushana Rao and Mrs. Venkayamma.
She graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry at a time when very few women went to college in India. She was classically trained in Carnatic music and won several prizes in numerous competitions.
She married Lakshmipathi Rao and their devoted loving union lasted 56 years. They settled in Vijayawada, India and raised five children, two sons and three daughters.
In addition to her passion for family, she was also interested in serving her community and held several leadership roles including President of Women’s Welfare Organization and President of Lioness Club. She was ahead of her time as a role-model for women and was a well- respected member of her community. She was lovingly referred to as “Amma” by all, which is an endearing term for “Mother” in India. With her husband, she emigrated to United States in 1988 to be close to her children and extended family. In America, she and her husband enjoyed many happy years living with her eldest son and loving daughter-in-law.
Gourimani is survived by her five children, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband and her three special brothers.
