Joe Halsema, 42, of West Lafayette, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly on March 31, 2022, at his home.

He was born in Lafayette, Indiana, on September 20, 1979, to Gordon Joseph Halsema and Jessica Marguerite (Boes) Hall. He is survived by his wife, Mary Helen (Nesbitt) Halsema, whom he happily married on December 18, 2010, at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Immaculate Inception in Lafayette, Indiana, where they are members.

He was a 1998 graduate of Harrison High School and began his career in sales at Tippecanoe Foods and Mike Raisor Pontiac. Joe was promoted to automotive finance management at Bill Gardner RV and Twin City Dodge Chrysler Jeep RAM for 6 years. He was promoted to new car sales and leasing management at Twin City for an additional 6 years. Joe ended his career as a finance manager at Bill DeFouw Chevrolet – his dream job. He loved the team dynamics of the staff, respected leadership and guidance provided, and loyalty of customers. Joe’s focus on building relationships and passion for positive customer service served him well over the course of his career.

Joe and his fellow Halsema family members were avid fans of IndyCar racing and gathered every May in Speedway to celebrate the Indy 500. Joe attended 35 years of Indy 500s and enjoyed every moment at the track. He also enjoyed boating, fishing, and spending time with family and friends.

Joe is survived by his father, Gordon Halsema of Speedway; his mother, Jessica Hall of Chalmers; his sister C. Bridgett (Dennis) Raney of Brookston and nieces Casserly and Pershing; his in-laws, Donald and Pamela Nesbitt of West Lafayette; his brother-in-law, Samuel (Jessie) Nesbitt of West Lafayette and niece Karli and nephew Colton; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jack and Janice Boes, and Bob and Kate Halsema; his aunt Kathy Nelson; his cousins Derrick Nelson and Kara Sergo; and Jimi Hall.
