Gordon Pettis passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 13, 2010. Gordon was born on November 20, 1927 at Kasota, Minnesota to Ira and Martha Pettis. He was the eighth of nine children and grew up on his parents’ farm. He went to a country grade school and then graduated from high school in St. Peter, Minnesota in 1946. He moved to the Parma, area in 1949 and bought a farm near Roswell in 1951. He married June Kirk in 1952. They raised three children, David, Raynel, and Wesley and lived on their farm for 52 years before moving to Caldwell in 2003.
In 1965 he went to work for the Canyon County Weed Control Department and advanced to the supervisor position in 1972. He was appointed to supervise the Canyon County Road, Bridge & Solid Waste departments in 1977. In 1980 a county-wide vote was taken to create a 4th highway district and dissolve the County Road and Bridge departments.
He was then selected to be the work director of daily operations under a new board of Highway Commissioners.
He and June had several years to do some traveling and enjoyed time spent in the Owyhee Mountains seeing wildlife and lots of livestock. He is survived by June, David (Debbie) of Fruitland, Raynel of Caldwell, and Wesley (Diane) of Boise, a sister Pauline of Rochester, MN, three grandsons and several great grand children. He was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings.
