Gloria Pauline Kunz McDaniel, 94, of Boerne passed away on Friday, August 27, 2021.
Gloria was born on August 25th, 1927 in Corpus Christi, Texas to Fred & Pauline Kunz. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, always putting her family first. She was a beautiful, vibrant lady known for her sparkling blue eyes and welcoming smile, never complaining when she was in pain. She was tough. She was very opinionated and wrote many letters to the editor in the local paper expressing those opinions. She was always kind. She loved animals and owned many herself, including a Shetland pony, horses, goats and chickens. The chickens were to be for eggs and dinners, however, she decided that some would be spared from becoming dinner. She started marking the chosen ones with shoe polish and before she knew it, they all had names. She was an amazing cook and was famous for her homemade dinner rolls which were as heavy as a brick but were the most delicious and favorite item at the Thanksgiving table. We are still trying to duplicate her recipe. We have a copy but it’s never the same – we think it was the love that may have made the difference. She made the best flour tortillas and fajitas we have ever had. She was a seamstress and a professionally trained artist. She also painted signs for the Eastwood Village Little League in San Antonio.
While living in Somerset, Texas, she met Wallis F. McDaniel whom she married right after WW2. They had two boys, Richard and David. They later moved to Devine, Texas and then to San Antonio. In 1968, they purchased land and moved to Boerne where they lived off of the land with gardens and hunting. They loved the Texas Hill Country.
Gloria is survived by her children, Richard W. McDaniel and David Paul McDaniel (Lisa); her grandchildren, Ashley Christopher McDaniel, April Dawn Blatchford (Sloan), Joshua Paul McDaniel (Jody), and Stephanie Ann McDaniel Brown; her great-grandchildren, Relina Kaytlynn Blatchford, Kennedy Renee McDaniel, Isaac Joshua McDaniel, and Chantel Denice Davis; and her sister, Josephine Koehler; her nieces and nephews, Brian and Joni Koehler, Bonnie and Tim Friesenhahn, and Ginger Koehler Howard; her great-nieces and great-nephews, Amy Catterson (Daniel), Adam Koehler, Erin McCord (Tucker), Lindsay Friesenhahn, Nicholas Friesenhahn, Holly Muniz (Rene), Maggie Burleson (Dustin); and her great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, Gabriel Catterson, Brynn McCord, Evelyn McCord, Clara McCord, Paxtyn Muniz, Luka Muniz, and Preslee Burleson.
Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Fred Kunz, Jr., and her sister FloraRose Sutton.
We would like to give special thanks to the staff at Cibolo Creek Rehab and Nursing Home for the loving care they gave her for the last eleven years, especially to her nurse, Jamaal, for his loving care to her and her family in her last days, and to our family and friends who have stayed beside us.
