Gloria Lawson Drummond passed away on Saturday night, December 10, 2011. She was a key figure in the creation of the Boca Raton Community Hospital, now known as the Boca Raton Regional Hospital.
Born in Hillsboro, Illinois on August 20, 1930 to her parents Clarence and Pauline Lawson, Gloria attended Washington University. Soon after graduation, she married Robert Drummond. She has been a Boca Raton resident since 1959. In 1962, Gloria suffered the tragic loss of two of her four children, Debbie age 9 and Randy age 3, when they drank milk that had been tainted by poison. At that time, when the children needed immediate medical attention, Gloria and her husband Robert drove them 15 miles from Boca Raton to Bethesda Memorial Hospital, the closest hospital at the time. Unfortunately, Debbie and Randy died that evening. The event galvanized the community to conceive and build a community hospital.
Gloria Drummond is predeceased by her four children Debbie, 1962, Robyn, 2001, Robert, 1989, and Randy 1962. Her ex-husband Robert Drummond died in 1989. Gloria is survived by her son, Douglas and her daughter Susan and their respective families. She is also survived by her brother James Lawson and his wife Gibby.
