Gloria Elisa Raymond, passed away on Wednesday, July 13, 2022 at Stony Brook Hospital in Southampton, NY. She was born on November 23, 1940 in Barbados in the West Indies to the late William Wilberforce Cadogan and Ada Cadogan. Gloria had four siblings and was the third child born to her parents.
Gloria grew up in Brittons Hill in St. Michael in Barbados. She left Barbados in 1960 to pursue a degree at Sir George Williams University in Montreal, Canada. Upon graduation, Gloria sought and found work in Labrador, Canada at Goose Air Base where she met a young officer, named John Raymond, Jr. who was stationed on the base.
In 1970, Gloria married John, the love of her life and husband of 47 years. Together they had two children, Jason and Kareem. Gloria and John started their married life in Dutchess County in New York, where both Jason and Kareem were born, but later moved to White Plains in 1977. They purchased a home on Trenton Avenue in White Plains and fostered many lifelong friendships with neighbors who became like family to them over the 45 years that they lived on the block.
Gloria had many passions. She was an avid gardener, and her flowers were often the envy of the neighborhood. She would spend hours in her garden making sure that her flowers would blossom to her exacting standards. Gloria enjoyed sewing and often designed and created her own clothing which often garnered her many accolades. Gloria was also passionate about advocating for the issues that she believed in. She believed deeply in fairness and advocated for equal opportunity for all. She was a voracious consumer of political news and would be eager to engage in a debate of ideas on the topic of the day.
Undoubtedly though Gloria’s primary passion in life was her love and devotion to her family. Gloria loved her parents and siblings and always spoke fondly of her time growing up in Barbados. She was a devoted wife and partner to John and truly loved and supported him in sickness and in health until death did them part. Gloria was an amazing mother, giving selflessly to ensure that her children had the greatest opportunities in life and demonstrated to them in ways large and small what it meant to be truly loved. Gloria’s love of family has most recently been displayed in her adoration of her grandsons, Mason and Camden. She would beam with pride and joy at the mere mention of their names.
Gloria is survived by her sons, Jason and Kareem, her daughter-in-law Tene, her grandchildren Mason and Camden and her siblings Isaac Cadogan, Shirley Cadogan and David Cadogan and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Gloria is pre-deceased by her husband, John and her brother, William “Willie” Wilberforce Cadogan II.
