Gloria Rose “Maw-Maw” McDonnell Barefoot passed away on October 6, 2016, at the age of 90 after a long, brave battle with Alzheimer’s. She was preceded in death by her husband Fred “Pa-Po” Barefoot. They were married on September 27, 1946 and they would have just celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. The daughter of the late Alvin McDonnell and Antoinette Randazzo Dubois, she was born in Biloxi, MS and was a longtime resident of New Orleans. Survivors include her devoted and loving daughter, Mona Laiche (Jay Babin) of Metairie, LA, granddaughter, Tammy Rose Laiche (Anthony Rizzo) of Metairie, LA, her two brothers, Jude and Mike McDonnell, cousins, Linda Johnson, Gene Fiala of Ocean Springs, MS, Gloria Howarth, Marie Clements and Rudy Balius of Biloxi, MS, Frank Fiala of California and numerous other cousins, nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her brother Joseph McDonnell.
Gloria graduated from John McDonough High School in 1944 and was a retired bookkeeper. She loved gardening and had a special fondness for her beautiful roses. She got a lot of enjoyment during quiet boat rides with her loving husband, granddaughter and her many faithful puppies at their family camp on the Tangipahoa River.
The family would like to extend special thanks to her caretaker Luz Ayestas, a living angel who cared for Gloria until the very end. The family sends their appreciation for the wonderful care that Dr. Monty Glorioso extended to her for nearly 15 years. The family would also like to acknowledge all the caretakers from AmeriCare Family Hospice.
