Glenna Faye Seymour Reed, 78, of Jacksonville, passed away November 27, 2015, at her son’s home in Downers Grove, surrounded by her loving son and grandchildren. She was born October 7, 1937, the daughter of Charles “Henry” and Faye Craddock Seymour at the family home in Manchester. She married Harold Reed. They later divorced.
She graduated from Jacksonville High School in 1955. She attended Brown’s Business College and later worked for the State of Illinois. She returned to work after her children were of school age. She was a baker at MacMurray College’s McClelland Dining Hall. Additionally, she worked in the campus bookstore and mailroom. She relished her 10 years working as an accountant at Wareco. She also worked for over 40 years at JCPenney in both part-time and full-time capacities.
She is survived and will be greatly missed by her son, Scott (wife, Lisa) Reed of Downers Grove; five grandchildren, Matt (wife, Megan) DeGroot of Bethalto, Brad DeGroot of Jacksonville, Molly DeGroot (fiancé Tommy Isringhausen) of Bismarck, ND, Erin Reed (fiancé Tyler Hollister) of Fort Myers, FL and Abby Reed of Cary; and two great-grandchildren, Jace and Reed DeGroot. She is also survived by three nephews, Charles “Chip”, Brett and Adam Craddock. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mindy Reed DeGroot; and her brother Donald E. Craddock (surviving spouse, Joyce of Jacksonville). She had life-long friendships with Phyllis Reynolds, Janet Chamberlain and Evelyn Sherrin.
Family and being a grandmother were the most important things in Glenna’s life. She cherished her grandchildren and great-grandsons. She was an integral part of her grandchildren’s lives, especially when her daughter, Mindy, died in 1999. Her grandchildren wanted for nothing when she was around and they rallied to her side when she needed it most. There will not be a holiday that passes that we won’t remember being in her kitchen, surrounded by family, good food, and lots of love.
Although she didn’t have pets, she fed every squirrel, stray cat and bird in the neighborhood. One cat in particular has dined on roasted chicken breasts for years.
