Glenn Robert Werther
1949 – 2016
Glenn R. Werther was born on December 16, 1949 to Leonard and Elizabeth Werther in Los Angeles, California.
A rebel from the start, Glenn joined the Army much to the chagrin of his father who had served with the US Navy during WWII. During his 40 year tenure with the US Army, Glenn attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and served in many posts including two deployments to The Republic of Viet Nam and Operation Enduring Freedom. He retired in January of 2011 in Fort Collins, CO and later joined Northrup Grumman as a contractor for special projects.
Glenn shared his life with so many.
He married his wife, Janice “Jan” Werther, on May 3, 2003 in Arlington, Virginia. Once Glenn retired, they joined their friends in the winter months in Key West and enjoyed the summer months at their home in Broad Brook, Connecticut surround by family. While their time together was cut short, their love story is one to be celebrated. Ever the rebel, Glenn wooed Jan from the start by inviting her on a motorcycle ride. Jan never left Glenn’s side, and in Glenn’s final days, he remarked that he “could not have picked a better woman to love.”
A father to Jason Werther and Tacy (Werther) Phelps, Glenn was a hero in the eyes of his grandchildren: Nathan, Cassidy, Caitlyn, Dominic, Jayden, and Joshua. He also was a stepfather to George “Mack” McKinney and a grandfather to Mack’s children: Riley, Ryann, and Hunter. Glenn frequently spent summers hosting his grandkids at his home in Connecticut, which they fondly called “the ranch”. There, he taught many of them how to pick blueberries, ride a four wheeler, fire a gun, and set off fireworks. He also instilled in them the importance of loving your family and serving your country.
Glenn was a brother to Anita (Werther) Mooney, Karen (Werther) Dunn, Keith Werther, Kevin Werther, and Barbara (Werther) Dastous (who has preceded him in death). Always quick to lend a hand or offer encouragement, Glenn truly cherished his family and frequently hosted family BBQ’s featuring raging bonfires and booming firework displays.
Glenn lived his life on his own terms.
To some, he was a rebel, and to others a hero. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, shooting his collection of guns, and traveling to faraway places, like Korea, at a moment’s notice for Northrup Grumman. He loved to travel, and never turned down the opportunity to explore. One of his favorite moments was enjoying the lunar eclipse on Waikiki Beach in Hawaii at midnight. He never missed an opportunity to try something new.
He also had a love of the sweeter moments in life, and was known by his grandkids to hold a secret stash of candy, even despite his doctor’s advice on occasion.
Ever thoughtful of those around him, Glenn’s final advice to his family and friends was this: Live your life outside the box and do your very best.
Glenn certainly did just that during his life and will be missed by so many. He entered into his eternal rest on April 26, 2016.
Glenn’s family will be receiving relatives and friends at Harry H.
