Glenn E. Tomforde
Glenn E. Tomforde, age 86, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Wednesday, November 30, 2005 at his home.
Glenn was born and raised in the area of Jackson and Heron Lake, Minnesota with his father William (a railroad man) and mother Mamie (Gramma Mary) and siblings William, Jr., Arthur, Victor, Wendell, Wilma and Viola. All of his family preceded him in passing.
At barely 18, Glenn joined the U.S. Army for battle duty in Europe and Southeast Asia, where he was awarded several medals during World War II, which include the French Star and the U.S. Army Unit Silver Star. His comrades considered him an excellent shot with the carbine rifle. Glenn participated in the Normandy invasion and Battle of the Bulge.
Glenn worked just blocks from his home on 516 Oates, for Kingan & Company and Hygrade Meats for almost 40 years and served as union steward and vice president, when the Union was then so very needed. Though uneducated, he was a born leader and a great friend to many. Also during this time, Glenn and Elna had a son, Tommy, (now living in Storm Lake with his wife, Wanda Jean) and daughter, Kathy (who lives in Kansas with her husband John). Tommy has two boys, Bryan and Daniel. Kathy’s only child, Michael, and father Ron Garlock live in Storm Lake.
The pastimes Glenn grew to love were hunting and fishing, camping, plus gardening and carpentry around the house.
And as anyone would say who had known him personally, Glenn would never hesitate to remind folk jokingly just how much of a good-looking man and lover he was. Glenn, through his adult life, knew many, many people who truly loved and respected him as a good man, father and husband.
