Glen Eugene “Gene” Shinabarger, 87, passed away peacefully into his Savior’s presence October 11, 2021, at Sugar Fork Crossing.

Gene was born to Glen Leroy and Sara Katherine (Pierce) Shinabarger on June 9, 1934. After attending Lapel High School, he married the engaging waitress at the Chick Inn, Carolyn Baker.

Gene proudly served his country in the United States Army and served as a Private First Class. They then moved to Texas, where their first son, Curt, was born. Returning to Anderson, Gene worked at Delco Remy for 40 years as a draftsman, tool designer, and foreman. To his delight, two more children, Mark and Susan, were added to the nest.

Although a skilled and responsible employee of General Motors, Gene’s life was full of many interests. As a Christian, he was a faithful participant at Bethel United Methodist Church, Pendleton Baptist Church, North Anderson Church of God, Meadowbrook Baptist Church, as well as First Baptist Church. He served in many capacities including: worship leader, Sunday School Superintendent, usher, as well as trumpet player.

In his leisure time, Gene might be found helping others, flying, camping, boating, fishing, swimming, or enjoying Craft club and the Masonic Lodge. In his retirement years, he volunteered many hours in various departments at both St. John’s and Community Hospitals. If you knew Gene, you would know him as a man with a gentle, humble spirit, warm heart, twinkling eyes, and an infectious smile. He never tired of enjoying life with a little crazy teasing. He adored his “wifey”.

In his last several years he has battled Alzheimer’s disease. Susan, his daughter, has selflessly poured out herself in daily supporting both he and Carolyn, and the family is exceedingly grateful. We look forward to being reunited with him in Heaven because of his trust in Jesus.

Gene is survived by his wife of 65 years, Carolyn; his children, Curt (Nancy), Mark, and Susan (Derrick) Woolf; his grandchildren, Rachel, Nathan (Shannon), Noah (Carol), Elizabeth (Grant) Trautman, and Emma Woolf. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marie Mitchell; and his granddaughter, Rebekah Shinabarger.
