Glen Dillavou, 96, formerly of Des Moines, IA, passed into the presence of his Savior, Jesus Christ, on January 24, 2022, at his daughter’s home in Churubusco. He had been living with his daughter Rebecca in Brownsburg and Churubusco, since 2009.
He was born on September 12, 1925, in Glidden, IA, to the late Ernest and Hazel (Cook) Dillavou. He spent his formative years in Glidden and attended Glidden High School.
Glen enlisted in the Army on his 18th birthday and left school a semester short of graduating to serve in Central Europe in WWII with the 87th Infantry Division from 1943 – 1946. He was awarded the Purple Heart for an injury in Belgium marching toward the Battle of the Bulge.
Glen was married to Ruth Johnson in Des Moines, Iowa. She preceded him in death on November 25, 2011. They were married for 61 years at the time of her death.
Glen worked in the mailroom at the Des Moines Register and Tribune before joining the Army. After serving his country, he worked in the mailroom at Meredith Publishing, retiring in 1987 after 37 years.
The last several years he has been able to enjoy spending time watching some of his great-grandchildren play just across the drive from him. He also had the opportunity to take the Honor Flight in the spring of 2015.
He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca Hawk; three sons, Greg (Janet) Dillavou, Steve Dillavou, and Brian (Lisa) Dillavou; nine grandchildren, Andrew and Amy Hawk, Jon and Geoff Dillavou, Adam, Kendra, Krista, Allie and Samantha Dillavou; several great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Merle Warren; his sister, Rosemary Smeltzer.
