LEOMINSTER – – Gilbert Tremblay, age 83, passed peacefully early in the morning on December 17, 2016 after a brief illness.

He leaves his beloved wife of 56 years, Carol (Bouchard) Tremblay; daughter Catherine Tremblay of Andover, two sons, Robert Tremblay of Templeton and his wife, Keri, William (Tremblay) Pineda of Ashby and his husband Javier, and three grandsons; William Pineda, Jr., Demmy Pineda of Ashby, and Carlos Pineda and his wife Bekah Pineda of Kennesaw, Georgia.

He was predeceased by his sister, Susan (Tremblay) Mankevetch, step-mother Lillian (Cormier) Tremblay, father Vincent Tremblay and mother Alice (Ledoux) Tremblay.

A child of French-Canadian immigrants, Gil was born in Leominster, growing up in the French Hill section of the city. He graduated from Leominster High School in 1951, served in the United States Air Force and earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education at Fitchburg State College.

A life-long Leominster resident, he began working as a high school English teacher in 1958, teaching in Marlboro, North Middlesex, Harvard, and Leominster, retiring from Leominster High School in 1993. He was dedicated to education and public service and was a member of the Veteran’s Chorus, the Trustees of the Leominster Public Library, the Leominster Historical Society, the Adult Learning in Fitchburg Area (ALFA), the Leominster Cultural Commission, and was a founding member of Sholan Farms. In 2006 he was recognized as the Citizen of the Year of Leominster.

Gilbert was a man of service and tolerance who positively affected all who knew him. He had an endless curiosity, and loved travel, reading, and learning. His many hobbies and interests included jazz music, camping, Red Sox Baseball, the New England Patriots, Thursday morning breakfasts with the ROMEO gang, and most of all, his family and friends.
