Gilbert Hayes, 84, of Centralia, passed away Saturday, October 6, 2018 at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia.
He was born January 16, 1934 in Rockford, son of Charles Hayes and Harriett (Josephson) Hayes. He married JoAnn Harris in 1974 in Rockford and she survives in Centralia.
In addition to his wife of 44 years, JoAnn Hayes of Centralia, he is also survived by a son: Douglas Hayes of Rockford; a daughter: Kimberly Ehrhart and husband Jeffery of Salem, Indiana; three step-daughters: Jayne Grant and husband Fred of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jeri Dedrick and husband Marshall of Rockford, and Jana Funderburk of Des Moines, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; brother: Thomas Hayes and wife Mary of Centralia; a sister: Kay Schubert and husband Jerry of Centralia; special neighbors, Kristi, Katy, and Aaron Bodine; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Gilbert graduated from Centralia High School in 1952. He retired from Greenlee Brothers in Rockford after 39 1/2 years. In 2002, he and JoAnn moved back to Centralia from Rockford. Gilbert and JoAnn spent many years snow birding with friends in Ft. Myers Beach, Florida. He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Centralia, where he was baptized as a child. Gilbert was also a member of the Centralia Elks Lodge 493, Centralia Moose Lodge 1219, Centralia Masonic Lodge 201, Sons of the American Legion and Eastern Star.
