Gilbert was born on February 6, 1924, in Lindy, NE, the son of Arthur and Mamie (Broders) Fisher.
At the age of 17, Gilbert worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps. He helped with the paving of the streets in Hoskins. Later, he was employed by his uncle, Forrest Fisher driving a city bus in Norfolk.
Gilbert enlisted in the United States Navy on December 28, 1942. He served in the Asiatic Pacific as a corpsman attached to the Marines. He earned his honorable discharge on April 13, 1946. After which, he returned to his job driving the Norfolk City Bus.
On July 9, 1948, Gilbert married Dora Maxine Barnhart.
He, later, began working at Burkhart Toggery Store.
Gilbert was very active in the community. He was a member of the Norfolk Masonic Lodge #55 AF & AM, where he was the holder of the Jordan Medal for being in the lodge longer than any other member. He also belonged to the Norfolk Morning Kiwanis and the First United Methodist Church.
He was devoted to his family and enjoyed help others.
Gilbert is survived by his children: daughter, Marcia Johnson, of Norfolk, and son, Gib and his wife, Kim, of Grand Island; three grandchildren, Matthew, Marshall and Bryce Fisher and great granddaughter, Lillian Fisher; his siblings: Jim Fisher, of Hillsboro, OR, Pat and Billy Fisher, of Morton, IL, Donna Sandy, of Hillsboro, OR, Marva and Donald Drake, of San Diego, CA, and Diana and Ron Maier, of Hillsboro, OR.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Maxine, granddaughter, Brandy Johnson, and two brothers, Harlan and Reed; and two sisters, Ruby and Mary Ann
