Gertrude Harris, the matriarch of her family, entered this life June 21, 1921 and departed this life for eternal rest on June 16, 2017, four days shy of her birthday. God knew how much she could bear and made her transition merciful. Family and friends are thankful God granted her ninety-five years to spend with us.
Psalm 73:28 states:
‘But as for me, it is good to be near God
I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge. “
Gertrude was married to the late Willie L. Harris for 41 years. From this union was one daughter, Eleanor Kennedy. To family and friends she was known as Little Sis, Aunt Sister, Gert and Gertrude. To Eleanor she was known as “Tit Tat”.
Gertrude attended and completed school i-n Jessup, Maryland where she developed reading, writing and math skills that enabled her to acquire and maintain gainful employment. During her early years Gertrude attended Payne Memorial AME Church.
Well into her 80s, Gert, as she was lovingly called, took refuge in the things that she loved, such as working in her yard, raking and bagging leaves, and mowing and trimming her immaculate lawn. She had every tool needed to complete her tasks. She loved maintaining her Rowers and when she tired she kept a chair close by to rest. She was a very independent woman who did very little talking, a kind and loving person. In addition to her outdoor skills, she was talented in crocheting, knitting and sewing. Most family members have on display some of her beautiful artwork. ‘
Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents Anne K. Washington and Cleve E. Thompson, one sister and two brothers. She leaves to cherish fond memories one daughter, Eleanor; two sisters Elsie Coleman and Nancy Allen; one brother, Fred Allen (Cora); two godchildren, Kathy King and Winnie Paladon and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
