Eileen Mattei Gillette entered into rest on December 11, 2014. She was born on December 10, 1917 in Chicago, Illinois as the only child of Arthur and Gertrude Mattei. After her father passed away when she was a very young child, she was raised by her mother and aunt who were both employed by the Chicago Schools. She loved Chicago and enjoyed an active social life as a teenager and young woman.
She graduated from Rosary College, now Dominican University, in 1939 with a degree in Liberal Arts and continued her education with graduate work in Library Science at The Chicago Teachers College. She taught in the Chicago public schools until her marriage in 1946. As a military wife, she enjoyed travelling and lived for a time in France. She was an avid reader, frequently reading three or more books per week, as well as a dedicated cross word puzzle fan. Her family also lovingly referred to her as “the world”s greatest shopper”. Eileen and her husband retired to Fair Oaks Ranch in 1991 and became active members of Saint Elizabeth Anne Seton Catholic Church and the parish”s Young at Heart Program.
At the time of her death, she was living at Cibolo House of Morningside Ministries in Boerne, Texas. Eileen was preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, Colonel Roy W. Gillette. She is survived by her son Roy W Gillette Jr., daughters Mary K Douglas & Anne Ridgley, grandchildren James A. Douglas, Kristina O”Brien, Lauren Williams, Cody Gillette and great – grandchildren Corey O”Brien, Madeline O”Brien, and Olivia O”Brien. Eileen will be remembered by her family and friends as a lady of exceptional beauty, charm, and grace.
