DURR
Geraldine Amelia Sykes Durr, 101, passed away February 22, 2015. She was born in New Orleans on October 28, 1913 to Lydia Klein Sykes and Henry A. Sykes, Sr. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Charles F. Durr, Sr., her parents, her brother Henry A. Sykes, Jr., and daughter, Marilyn Durr Deal. She is survived by her son Charles F. Durr, Jr., his wife Atholyn Durr, daughter Barbara Durr Gron, and her husband Kenneth Gron.
She leaves to cherish her memories seven grandchildren Lydia Deal Benoit,
Kenneth Mark Deal, Charmaine Deal Dorsa, Charles Kenneth Deal, Charles F. Durr III, Brian J. Gron, Patrick J. Gron, five great grandchildren, extended family and friends. After graduating from McDonogh High School in 1930, Jerry
took courses at Soule Business College before working for the New Orleans
Charlie. They were married in 1936, lived in the Carrollton area for several
years before moving to Gentilly where they continued to raise their family,
and were members of St.
together they were dedicated to their family, started their own business, Durr Paper Products, in 1948 which they operated until 1990, and supported each other in their hobbies which included carnival activities and gardening. As an avid gardener, Jerry was a 50 year member of Pontchartrain Garden Club, President of P.G.C., Federated Council of New Orleans Garden Club Chairman, and
Club President of the National Council of State Garden Clubs. She volunteered on many beautification projects sponsored by the New Orleans Floral Trail, and “having a green thumb”, was the recipient of countless horticultural awards. Her sweet smile, twinkling blue eyes, and gentle hugs will be missed by many.
Our family would like to thank the staff at Greenbriar Nursing Home in Slidell for the special care they provided to Jerry in her last days.
