Geraldine “Gerry” Ann Cummins, 86, of Elkhart, passed away Friday morning, July 12, 2013, in her home.

She was born in Elkhart to the late Lloyd and Gertrude Lerner.

Gerry is survived by her husband, Andre “Andy” Brooks Cummins; five children, Deborah (Mel) Jacobson of Bristol, Craig (Diane) Cummins of Mishawaka, Robert (Kathy) Cummins of Bloomington, James (Karen) Cummins of Elkhart and Constance Cummins of Hayward, Wis.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Her brother Lowell Lerner preceded her in death.

All will remember Gerry for her warm, generous heart and sweet smile.

Gerry graduated from Elkhart High School in 1944 and received a B.S. and M.S. in education from Ball State University. She and Andy were married on June 7, 1947. She was an elementary school teacher in the Elkhart Community School system for 25 years.

Gerry was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. She was also a former member of Heart City Kiwanis and belonged to the Indiana Retired Teachers Association and Elkhart Conservation Club. She was a member of the Alpha Sigma Tau sorority.

Many days of her childhood were spent at her family’s Lerner Theatre in downtown Elkhart. Gerry traveled to all 50 states and visited many countries in Europe and South America, and she spent a year living in England, during which time she met the Queen Mother and Lady Aster. When her children were school-aged, summers were often spent on long camping trips.

The first gift she received from her husband was a tennis racquet; from then on, one of her greatest joys was participating in or watching tennis and any sport you could name. Gerry was a dedicated “sidelines coach” for many of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
