He was born in Boise, Idaho on August 24, 1946 the son of Gerald and Vera (Keim) Kinnear. He attended school in Boise and before graduating he joined the Navy.

Gerald, always known as Mike, served two tours of duty in the Navy as a Morse code radio operator in Vietnam. After his tours, Mike worked as a credit union manager, debt collections officer for finance companies in Pocatello and American Falls. He then worked as an electrician for Idaho Fish and Game to travel around the state of Idaho on their construction crew. While working with the crew he also had the opportunity to learn and to operate heavy equipment.

He started his electrical career as an apprentice and then journeyman electrician. After working for several electrical companies, he started his own business called Mike Kinnear Electrical Contractor. He then went together with his longtime friend, Russ Davis, to start their business called R & M Electrical Contractors. After a few years, Mike went on to be an Electrical Inspector for the City of Boise. When he retired in 2010 he had advanced to Chief Electrical Inspector for the City of Boise.

Mike was always an avid hunter and fisherman throughout his life, Alice also learned to love fishing. They spent most of their weekends and vacations camping and fishing at places like Sumpter Lake in Oregon, Hells Canyon, Brownlee and other great spots in Idaho.

Mike and Alice had intended to retire on their riverfront property on the Snake River, but health issues prevented them from completing this dream. They did eventually decide to stay in their home in Boise which they totally remodeled together.
