Gerald C. “Jerry” Hannel, 87, of Ashland, IL died Sunday, April 5, 2015 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL.

He was born December 28, 1927 in Hillview, IL, the son of Will and Mary Evans Hannel. He married Bess Dawson on June 21, 1952 and she survives.

He is also survived by five children, Steven Hannel of Ashland, Sharon Briggs (husband, Rick) of Springfield, Robert Hannel (wife, Martha) of Pleasant Plains, Cindy Hannel of Ashland, and Ron Hannel (wife, Brenda) of Dawson; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; two sisters, Ruby Acree and Florence “Muggins” Acree, both of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter, four brothers, and three sisters.

Jerry served with the US Army during WW II. An accomplished carpenter and wood worker, he was a 60 year member of Carpenter’s Local #16 of Springfield.

In addition, he operated Jerry’s Saw Shop from his home for many years. He was a talented and passionate wood carver, well known for carving duck and Lincoln figures. He was also a devoted gardener. He was devoted to his family and his granddog, “LouLou”.
