Gerald “Jerry” Fleming, 72, of Greene County IN, passed away on January 19, 2017 at IU Health Bloomington Hospital.

Jerry was born on July 22, 1944 in Chicago, IL to Omer and Jeanette (Knip) Fleming. In 1951 the family moved to their farm in Greene County. Jerry retired from Kroger’s in 1999 where he was a UFCW Union member for 37 years.

Having grown up as a hard-working boy devoted to his parents and farm, he was unpretentious, nonjudgmental, and understanding toward others. When he married Susan Baxter-Fleming on March 22, 1986 he welcomed her family, especially the little ones, to enjoy the offerings found only on a farm. He facilitated hayrides, bonfires, tractor rides, and driving lessons that will forever be cherished memories. Full of smarts, common sense, resourcefulness and a great sense of humor, he was the man called upon by neighbors, friends and family to lend a helping hand when they faced their toughest challenges. How do you describe a man who had the fortitude to do the work of a lumberjack, a mechanic, a farmer, but also had the tenderness of heart to assist with the personal care for his mother during hospice? To those who knew him, he was a hero.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Susan; his sister Jean (David) Collier; his daughters Diane Fleming, Darlene (Kevin) Ramey, Delaine (Doug) Gilbert; his grandchildren Jerry Wayne, Andy, Ryan and Heather.
