Gerald was born in Sargent, Nebraska on February 19, 1925 to Walter and Ada Mattox. He moved to Idaho with his parents and 7 siblings in 1936. At age 17, he enlisted in the US Navy, and did active duty on the USS Portland in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Theatre. He also enlisted in the Coast Guard Reserve in 1968.
In 1945, Gerald married Juanita Gainey, and they started a family of their own, bearing a son, Gary L. Mattox, who resides in Meridian.
He worked various jobs in the Treasure Valley, his primary job being with Garrett Trucking, where he drove triples for 18 years. Other jobs included, Troy Laundry, Home Dairies, and Safeway Trucking.
Gerald is survived by his current wife, Bernice Mattox, who resides at Autumn Wind, where Gerald also spent his last days. He is also survived by three sisters and a brother; Donna Gestrin, Mary Beavers, Anita Dietrich, and Marlin Mattox. Also surviving are brother-in-laws, Albert Gestrin and Ward Beavers; sister-in-law, Harla Mattox; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gerald passed into the Lord’s care on December 26, 2015, preceded in death by his parents Walter and Ada, a brother Norman Mattox, a sister Darlene Wilson, and a sister Evelyn Beavers.
Many times in his life Gerald helped others in their times of need and we pray he is remembered by his giving heart and contagious energy.
