He served in the Georgia National Guard and in 1988 he was appointed an Honorary Lieutenant Colonel Aide-de-Camp in the Alabama State Militia by Gov. George C. Wallace. He served on the Wiregrass Mental Health Board (1987-2009) and the Barbour County Industrial Development Board until his death. He was well respected for his political insight and his advice was often sought on local political issues.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Daniel Norton of Columbus, Georgia and Clio, Alabama. He is survived by his sister Carol Norton Bell (Jerry) of Smyrna, GA and longtime friend, companion, girlfriend of more than thirty years, Regina Reilly of Eufaula, AL and her extended family Cindy Baggett Barr of Phenix City, AL; Dee Baggett Evans (Don) of Pine Mountain, GA; Colette B. Barricks (Eric) of Westerville, OH; Courtney R. Potthoff (Kevin) of Eufaula, AL; and grandchildren, Reilly Potthoff, Reid Potthoff, and Ashley Barricks.
