George Wayne Harkins passed away on Sunday, August 8th, 2021, on the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina. He was predeceased by his parents, George D. Harkins and Vanilla Crane Harkins. He is survived by his wife, Sharon E. Harkins (Painter), and his two daughters, Shannon Marie Matheson (Terry Matheson) and Colleen Harkins Puckett (Mark Steven Puckett, Jr.), both of Senoia, GA, and five grandchildren (Thomas Jacob McCaskill, Jayna Rhiannon Matheson, Mark Steven, III, Clara Anne and Colin George Puckett), all of whom he loved dearly. He is also survived by his sister, Re- Ta Miller, of Wytheville, VA, and his brother, Richard D. Harkins (Suzanne Thornton) of Brighton, MI. he is also a presence in Sharon’s niece, Paula Leigh Fannin (Cery Fannin) and her children’s lives. George was born in Gainesville, Georgia on June 1, 1947. He enlisted in the Army at 18. His 24-year career included assignments to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, three tours in Vietnam, Thailand, Fort Dix, New Jersey, Greece Maryland, Korea, and Belgium. He retired from the Army as a First Sergeant from Fort McPherson, GA, on May 1, 1989. He was most proud of his service as a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division. He went on to retire again in 2012 from the Atlanta Airlines Terminal Corporation at Hartsfield- Jackson International Airport in Atlanta. George was an active member of VFW Post 2667 and the American Legion Post 57. He also volunteered his time at Meals on Wheels of Coweta County (MOWOC) and as a courtesy cart driver at Piedmont Newnan Hospital. He was an avid hunter and loved fishing with Sharon, riding his motorcycle with his many like-minded friends, and spending time with his grandchildren, not necessarily in that order.
