George W. Johnson, 87, a Lunenburg native, and longtime resident of Leominster, passed away on December 23, 2016 at Marlboro Hills. George was born in Waltham, MA on September 6, 1929, the son of the late Edwin and Marion (Clark) Johnson. He graduated from Lunenburg High School as an athletically gifted member of the Class of 1949, a two sport athlete who lettered three years in basketball and four years in baseball. He is an inductee of the Lunenburg Hall of Fame. George attended Becker College, He was also competitive at archery, clay pigeon shooting and ping pong.

From 1950 to 1954 he served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Piedmont and the USS Sullivan during the Korean War and was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with 2 stars, Navy Occupation Service Medal and a U.N. Service Medal. He also played for the Naval Baseball team against North Korea and won during his service.

Upon his retirement as a Federal employee, George and Joanne resided in the Siesta Key area of Florida during the winter months where he excelled (in his opinion) playing golf. They also traveled extensively around the country and the world.

George is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joanne (Mendolusky) Johnson. Two daughters, Elizabeth Johnson and her significant other Peter Zichelle of Sterling, MA, Rebecca Stearns and her husband Michael Stearns of Paxton, MA, a stepson, David Mattos of Leominster, a grandson, Will Cooper Stearns of Paxton, MA, two step grandsons (twins) Trae and Logan Bush of Lunenburg and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brother Charles and his wife Sharee of Vancouver, WA. He was predeceased by his sister Barbara Cadwell and three brothers, Norman, Robert and Donald.

George’s wife Joanne is currently in an acute care center while being treated for cancer.
