NEW HARTFORD — George Steve Reder, 82 died peacefully Sat. Feb. 15, 2020, at his home in New Hartford. His wife of 50 years Helen L. (Hull) Reder was at his bedside.George was born in Budapest, Hungary Jan. 15, 1938, son of the late Jacob Reder and Maria (Hufnagel) Reder. At 17; during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, George escaped under threat of death to Austria as a refugee and with the assistance of the Experiment in International Living, Putney VT; immigrated to the U.S.A. As a refugee he joined the U.S. Army and trained in Alaska, he volunteered for Vietnam but was kept stateside. He survived the Great Alaskan Earthquake of 1964. He completed his service at Ft. Benning GA. as an Officer’s Candidate Instructor’s Aid utilizing his expertise in heavy weapons and tactics.After the Army, he proudly obtained his U.S. Citizenship, attended E.C. Goodwin School and became a tool and die maker. He worked at Olivette and Underwood typewriters until they closed and then went to Arrow Hart. He would stay with them and their subsidiaries moving from tool and die to eventually become plant manager. He retired in 2003. A skilled craftsman, George always kept himself busy with yardwork and woodworking. Give the man a hammer and a board and he could build you anything. He also served on the New Hartford Economic Development Commission and was one of the founders and coaches of the New Hartford Youth Soccer program. He and his wife Helen enjoyed cruising the warm waters of the Caribbean. He is survived by his wife Helen Hull Reder, his son and daughter Jason and Allison Reder and two very special grandchildren Tyler and Emma Burnett. His sister Melinda (Zolton) Grisztel, his cousin George Hufnagel, niece Viktoria (George) Biro and nephew Zolton Grisztel.
