Mr. George Spencer Haynie, Jr., 78 , of Elberton, passed away on Wednesday, October 28, 2020, at Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital. Mr. Haynie was born in Atlanta on April 8, 1942, son of the late George Spencer, Sr. and Claire Vaughn Haynie. He was a 1961 graduate of Warner Robins High School, a 1963 graduate of Georgia Southwestern College, and a 1966 graduate of the University of Georgia. After graduation, George went to work for Georgia Mountain Planning and Development Commission in Gainesville. From there, he was promoted to West Central Georgia Planning and development Commission in Ellaville. He was then promoted to the Chattahoochee-Flint Area Planning and Development Commission in Newnan in 1969, and worked there as an Assistant Director until he retired in 1985. After moving to Elberton in 1991, he went to work for the City of Elberton in the Utility Department in 1994 through 2000. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Newnan and was a sponsor for the Special Olympics. He was also a member of the Civilian Club in Newnan, the Antique Automobile Club of America, the Early Ford V-8 Club of America, the National Street Rod Association, and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals. Survivors include his sister, Susan Haynie Collier; niece, Emily Collier Driggers; nephew, Robert Brooks Collier; great-niece, Emma Louise Collier; and great-nephew, Rylan Vance Driggers.
