George S. Marcum, 78 of Centralia, passed away Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Centralia Manor.George was born January 8, 1936 in Centralia, son of Stacy and Agnes (Brasel) Marcum.
He married Karen (Killion) Marcum on September 29, 1956 at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and she survives in Centralia.In addition to his wife of 57 years, he is also survived by three sons: Brad Marcum and wife Cheryl of Indianapolis, IN, Greg Marcum and wife Pam of Centralia, and Chip Marcum of Centralia; a daughter: Gina Lynn Coulter and husband Jason of Centralia; ten grandchildren: Kenneth Marcum and wife Symeta of St. Louis, MO, Danielle Fauser and husband Jeff of Peoria, Dr. Blake Marcum and wife Lindsay of Springfield, Bethany Jensen and husband Caleb of Indianapolis, IN, Christopher Woodward of Dyersburg, TN, Kenzie Tate and husband Curtis of Centralia, Courtney Marcum of Pana, Tim Marcum and wife Ellia of Indianapolis, IN, Mason Marcum of Pana and Shelbee Coulter of Centralia; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers: Lyle “Fish” Marcum and wife Patsy and Billy Joe Marcum all of Centralia; two sisters: Jean Peters of Little Rock, AR and Carol Marcum of Chicago; a sister-in-law: Iris Marcum of Champaign; a special niece, Marty Golden of Spring Hill, FL; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Richard “Dick” Marcum and Roger Marcum, and two sisters: June Syznowski and Lila Keller. Also, a brother-in-law, Pete Peters and two sister-in-laws: Marie Marcum and Janette Marcum.George was an avid sports fan. Anytime the Orphans or the St. Louis Cardinals were playing he would be able to give you up to the minute replays and stats. He loved watching all sports and spending time with family and friends. George earned numerous awards and letters for playing basketball, football and he would say track because they had to by Coach Evers when he was at CTHS. He went on to be a standout at Centralia Community College (Kaskaskia College) in basketball and earned a scholarship to Kentucky Wesleyan to play. He was inducted to both the Centralia Sports Hall of Fame and to the Kaskaskia Sports Hall of Fame. George loved to talk sports with anyone who could keep up with him. He loved to be surrounded by his kids and grand-kids. He was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
