George Roger Campbell, 79, of Centralia, passed away Saturday, January 12, 2019 surrounded by his family. Roger was born April 27, 1939 in Centralia, son of Clay Campbell and Mattie (Potts) Campbell. He married Linda (Kelley) Campbell on March 27, 1960 and she survives in Centralia.
In addition to his wife of 58 years, Linda Campbell of Centralia, Roger is also survived by two sons: Gregory B. Campbell and wife Heather of Park Ridge, IL and Timothy C. Campbell and wife Melissa of Plainfield, IL; six grandchildren: Erica Fischer Trone and husband Travis of Centralia, Matthew Campbell of Park Ridge, IL, Taylor Campbell of Chicago, IL, Lauren Campbell of Los Angeles, CA, William Campbell and Charlotte Campbell of Plainfield, IL; two great-grandsons: Easton Fischer and Eric Trone of Centralia; a brother: Herbert Lee Campbell and wife Barbara of San Antonio, TX; sisters-in-law Betty Campbell of Centralia and Doris Campbell of Memphis, TN, Sydne (Dowell) Kelley of Sandoval, and Kathy (Noland) Atchison of Orange Park, FL; brother-in-law Jack (Donna) Kelly of Castle Rock, CO; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter: Michele L. Fischer and a son-in-law: Eric Fischer; sisters Virginia Newland, Maxine Martin, and Betty Marrs; brothers Bob Campbell, Bill Campbell, and Richard Campbell; Roger earned his Bachelors degree in education at SIU-Edwardsville and his Masters degree from Eastern Illinois. He worked as a teacher at Raccoon Grade School and others for 30 plus years until his retirement in 1994. He refereed basketball and volleyball games for 38 years throughout Southern IL, and he officiated the IHSA girls’ basketball state tournament in Champaign 3 times.
He served as a trustee and usher at Trinity Lutheran Church in Centralia for years. Roger enjoyed doing carpentry work, and he loved spending time with his family and friends. Roger was known for helping others and always being able to bring a smile to your face.
