George R. “Dick” Stromer, 85, of New Buffalo, Michigan died Wednesday morning, February 2, 2011, at Royalton Manor, St. Joseph, Michigan.Dick was born March 15, 1925 in New Buffalo to George and Olive (Fickle) Stromer. He graduated from New Buffalo High School in 1942. Dick proudly served his country in the Philippine Islands at Ie Shima and Japan as a radio operator for the US Army Air Corp during WWII.

He married Betty “Bedge” Hamann on November 27, 1946 in New Buffalo. He had an appreciation of the beauty and joy that flowers bring to people. Dick owned and operated the South Michigan Nursery and Orchards, and Stromers Fruit Market. He also was a landscaper in St. Pete, Florida where he lived for 5 years. Upon his return to New Buffalo, he continued working as a landscaper for the McDonalds Restaurants in Indiana before his retirement. He will be remembered by all the beautiful flowers, trees, and bushes he planted that are still found growing at many businesses and homes in the area.

Dick loved the Chicago Cubs and was a life member of the Three Oaks F. and A.M.Lodge #239; He was a member of the VFW Post # 2536 and the Edward C. Sexton American Legion Post # 169. Dick was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a wonderful friend to many.He is survived by his wife, Bedge; children, David (Earlene) Stromer of Michigan City, Indiana, Pamela (Tom) Detroye of Howards Grove, Wisconsin, Paula Hatfield (Scott Evans) of Michigan City and Jon (Carrie) Stromer of LaPorte, Indiana; grandchildren, Tammi, Tricia, Todd, Doug, Nicole, Dakota, J.D., Kurtis, Shawn and Kris; great grandchildren, Briana, Jonah, Devon, Hannah, Tyler, Kyra, Jaden and Alaina; brother Joseph (Joan) Stromer of St. Joseph and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, John and granddaughter, Robyn Asch.
