Waterbury- Mr. George P. McMahon, 91, affectionately known as “Scottie” to his friends and co-workers, died Wednesday evening, September 10 at St. Mary’s Hospital. He was the husband of Nora (Gardley) McMahon.
Mr. McMahon was born May 25, 1917 in Edinburgh, Scotland son of the late William and Maitland (Baldie) McMahon. Mr. McMahon was a Flight Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force during WWII, serving as a bombardier and navigator in the two man crew, flying a DeHaviland Mosquito. His missions ranged from the hunt for the German Battleship Bismark through the African campaign.
Mr. McMahon emigrated to Canada and then to America, with his wife Nora and their oldest son John, settling in Waterbury. He had worked as a master carpenter, including a time as a supervisor on the construction of the I-84 mixmaster in Waterbury. He then worked for the Colonial Bank and Trust / Bank of Boston as a carpenter for more than two decades before his retirement.
In addition to his wife he is survived two sons, John J. McMahon and his wife Margaret Nolan of Keene, NH and George Michael McMahon and his wife Nancy Owens of Thomaston; one daughter, Mary C. Mcmahon-Hallock and her husband Todd Hallock of Thomaston; eight grandchildren, Sheila McMahon, Megan McMahon Hall and her husband Christopher, Bridget McMahon, Kathleen McMahon Brown and her husband Frankiln, Ashley R. McMahon, James I. McMahon, Michaela E. N. McMahon and Patrick J. McMahon and one great granddaughter, Grace Elizabeth Hall
