George Montes Jr.

April 8, 1960 – November 10, 2021 (age 61)

After a difficult and painful battle with cancer, George is at peace now with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  He was born April 8, 1960, in El Paso, Texas. 

Throughout his life, George took great pride and honor to serve his community as a Hobbs Police Officer for 20 Years, where he was a member of the TRT and SWAT teams, also served as a Firearms Instructor and SRO in the Hobbs Municipal Schools.  He also served as a Hobbs Police Reserve officer for more than five years.  George worked the past nine years with kids as a Truancy Prevention Specialist with the Hobbs School District and assisted in directing The Century 21 afterschool program.  He worked with At Risk Youth of Lea County with Commissioner Joe Calderon throughout his career.  George also volunteered as a youth soccer and baseball coach in Hobbs with the USSSA organization.  He also volunteered with Boy Scout Troop 97 and was committee member; he was a member of the Community Drug Coalition of Lea County.   He was an active member and President of the Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club.

George received many accolades in his lifetime, one being “Law Enforcement Hero of 2013” by the American Red Cross – SENM Chapter.

George was instrumental in working with lawmakers from both local and state levels to vote on and pass legislation to make it illegal for any person within the incorporated city limits of Hobbs to possess or sell synthetic marijuana and salvia bath salts.

George took great honor and pride being the Godfather (Nino) to Emmanuel Montes, Jason Montes, Jacob Kleinsteuber, Makenzie Kleinsteuber and Andrew Kleinsteuber.

George loved doing anything and everything with his loving son Dakota., He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson, fishing, running, and staying fit.  His family envied his hunting and shooting skills.

Immediate surviving family members include his loving son Dakota Rio Montes, Donna Montes former wife of 37 years, of Hobbs, brother Victor Montes and wife Patricia of Ruidoso, NM, sister Annette DeLeon and husband Albert of Hobbs, sister Deborah Montes and Hector Aldrete of Hobbs, and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

George was preceded in death by his loving father George Sr., mother Mary and niece Angela DeLeon.

He will truly be missed and will forever be in our hearts.
